Wolf Elective 15 Grow Something

Having to combine our two wolf dens and getting seven scouts that had very little achievements accomplished more than half way through our year has wrecked havoc in our den plans. We try to combine as many achievements and electives as possible while doing something different for the boys who already completed it. The boys have been working on their World Conservation Awards. For part this they must complete all of wolf elective 15. We combined 15a - plant and raise a box garden and 15b - plant and raise a flower bed. I also had three scouts that missed collecting and 15d - plant and raise vegetables so I had them plant vegetables in their flower beds as well. This activity cost us less than $0.77 per scout. Makes a great Mother's Day Gift.

Preparations:
In order to make this as low cost as possible we used a pallet we found to build the plant boxes. First we had to tear down the pallets.

Then cut them down to size each planter needs 3- 12"X 3.5" & 2- 3.5"X3.5" pieces

Next I predrilled wholes. This makes it easier for the scout as they don't have to hold the nail to start it in the wood. Two small wholes to fit your nails in each end of the 12"X3.5" wood (total of 12 wholes)

Building:
We gave our scouts the wood, nails and basic safety instructions.
Most of them built them with no to little help from adults.
Stand small pieces up and place long piece across. Put nails in wholes and hammer in place.

Flip over and do same on reverse to make the sides

Add bottom and nail

Finished
Just add soil and flowers

Total Cost 14 Scouts:

Wood - Free
Soil - $1.28 X 2 bags = $2.56
Flowers - $1.68 X 3   = $5.04
Nails -  $3.17 1lb box =$3.17
-----------------------------------------
                                      $10.17

10.17/14scouts= $0.77/scout
